New research paves the way for nano-movies of biomolecules

An international team, including scientists from DESY, has caught a light sensitive biomolecule at work with an X-ray laser. The study proves that X-ray lasers can capture the fast dynamics of biomolecules in ultra slow-motion, as the scientists led by Prof. To read more about the story please go to DESY Press Release

First observations of photosystem II molecular dynamics

A collaboration led by Prof. Petra Fromme (Arizona State University) allowed us to monitor the water splitting process that occurs in photosystem II and saw large conformational changes. First Image of Super-Cooled Liquid Water (-46C)

Our team took part in a study, led by Prof. Anders Nilsson (SLAC), aimed to decipher fundamental properties of water at extremely cold temperatures. The findings provide a first step to uncharted territory. To read more about the research please visit DESY Press Release.

Philosophical Transactions B journal highlights XFEL as emerging field

Prof. Henry Chapman and Prof. John Spence (Arizona State University) compiled and edited a special issue on the emerging applications of X-ray Free-Electron Lasers (XFEL) in structural biology. The special issue, which follows the Royal Society "X-ray Lasers in Biology" conference, contains contributions from numerous leaders in the field. Serial Crystallography Technique Utilized at a Synchrotron

The method was applied at Petra III, DESY's synchrotron light source, using lysozyme microcrystals as a model system. There were 40,000 plus single-crystal diffraction patterns obtained producing a structural model (see image on the side). The advantage that this method could bring is "to close a size gap for samples that are too small for conventional synchrotron investigations and sort of too large for free-electron lasers" says Dr. Francesco Stellato (former team member). International Summer School of Crystallography

The Center for Free-Electron Laser Science (CFEL) hosted 38 students from 24 various countries as they attended the first International Summer School of Crystallography. Welcome Tokushi Sato!

Tokushi earned his BS in Photonics Material Science at Chitose Institute of Science and Technology. He then attended Tokyo Institute of Science and Technology where he completed his MS and PhD in Chemistry and Material Science. Tokushi's PhD studies focused on developing the time-resolved beamline NW14A in KEK and investigate photo-chemical reaction by using NW14A. In particular, his studies were dedicated for the laser and the external triggering system. Currently his research interests center around the photochemical properties using ultra short X-ray pulse. He will be working as a laser scientist with the SPB/SFX team to construct the laser system and the hutch. We are pleased to welcome him to the group!

Novel Mechanism Applied at a Synchrotron

Using DESY's synchrotron X-ray light source, Petra III, we applied the serial crystallography method (commonly used at X-ray Free-Electron Lasers) to microcrystals of an enzyme found in the sleeping sickness parasite. Until now microcrystals could only be analyzed with extreme intense light of X-ray lasers, which only two are currently operating in the world, opening up new utility to more common light sources like synchrotrons. Welcome Patrik Vagovič!

Since 2008, Patrik has been working as the beamline scientist at full-field hard X-ray imaging beamline Topo-Tomo at ANKA light source. In 2012 he joined the group of Atsushi Momose in Japan where he participated in development of X-ray imaging techniques based on grating interferometry for laboratory sources as well as for synchrotrons. He completed his PhD at Slovak Academy of Sciences, Slonakia in 2008 with the topic “X-ray crystal optics for material characterization and hard X-ray imaging”. Patrik has joined our group as a visiting scientist at European XFEL and will work on the development of the experimental instrument, SFX, located at the SPB endstation. Patrik’s research interests are related to development of hard X-ray imaging techniques and optics, diagnostic techniques and instrumentation for high brilliant coherent X-ray sources. We warmly welcome him to our team!

Markus Metz joins CI as a PhD student

Markus studied Biochemistry at the Technical University of Munich where I received my BSc. He completed his Master's at the Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel and worked on X-ray crystallography of Ribosomes. During his time with the group, Markus will do research on serial femtosecond crystallography.
