Postdoctoral Research Opportunities


The Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron (known as DESY) has had a long tradition in synchrotron radiation experiments in a wide range of applications and has developed into one of the leading centers in this field worldwide. The X-ray Multilayer Group at DESY is developing novel X-ray optics to be used with intense, coherent X-ray sources such as state-of-the-art synchrotrons and free-electron lasers. Such sources have opened up new opportunities for breaking barriers in focusing, dispersing, and otherwise controlling X-ray pulses in space and time, which will enable exciting new applications in imaging, spectroscopy, and nonlinear optics. Our goal is to develop efficient X-ray optical elements to build up the functionalities that are taken for granted in laser laboratories but have long been denied to scientists working in the X-ray range. By controlling the 3D structure of materials over large volumes and on nanometer scales we are building a new class of nanofocusing lenses, gratings, pulse compressors, waveplates, and beam splitters.



Requirements

We are seeking for a Postdoctoral scientist to design, fabricate and test novel X-ray optics at the synchrotron or FEL sources and participate in experiments utilizing these type of optics.

The candidate should have a PhD in physics or a related field, experience in X-ray optics design and computer programming and knowledge in nanofabrication and/or nano-characterization (such as SEM, AFM, TEM, X-ray based techniques). Experience working with synchrotron sources and/or optics is highly desirable. We are looking for a talented and highly motivated individual with strong interest in X-ray physics or optical sciences that likes to work in a team and has good verbal and written English communication skills.

The position is initially limited to 2 years. Salary and benefits are commensurate with those of public service organizations in Germany. Classification is based upon qualifications and assigned.
